Mattos Filho is a member of the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance (NZLA), a new alliance formed by more than 20 leading international law firms. The initiative was created from Race to Zero, a UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) campaign that aims to zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050.
To support this macro goal, each member is committed to creating clear targets for reducing their emissions by 2030 and 2050. Other commitments include: encouraging its clients to sign commitments similar to those of the Race to Zero campaign; developing and training lawyers on climate change issues; being an active player for change in the legal system, including regulatory bodies and industry associations; and providing pro bono service, when possible, for collaborative legal initiatives.
“This challenge includes all industries and all countries because only with everyone’s commitment will we be able to promote this change, starting from an energetic and profound transition. The safety of people, cities, and history is at stake,” explains Lina Pimentel, partner of Mattos Filho’s Environmental Law and Climate Change practice area. “We were already on this ‘Race to Zero’ journey since we joined the Global Compact’s Business Ambition for 1.5°C in 2019. But the recently joining the Net Zero Lawyers Alliance with other large global firms has solidified what we need to do,” she comments.
“Participating in this new global alliance of firms committed to accelerating the transition to zero carbon by 2050 demonstrates Mattos Filho’s pioneering spirit with the sustainability agenda. Joining forces with our professionals, clients, and partners to build a sustainable future is another opportunity for us to act as real transforming agents of society,” says Laura Davis Mattar, manager of Diversity, Inclusion and Corporate Citizenship at Mattos Filho.
In addition to Mattos Filho, members of the new initiative include Arthur Cox, Baker McKenzie, Bates Wells, Burges Salmon, Castrén & Snellman, Clifford Chance, Clyde & Co, DLA Piper, Draper & Draper, Eversheds Sutherland, Herbert Smith Freehills, Hogan Lovells, Mishcon de Reya, Pinsent Masons, Pollination Group, Reed Smith, Shearman & Sterling, Slaughter and May, and Taylor Wessing.
