Mattos Filho has released the 13th edition of its Annual Report, a publication that outlines the firm’s key initiatives in 2022. The report highlights Mattos Filho’s brand repositioning in marking its 30th anniversary, providing details on efforts related to people management, diversity, equity and inclusion, local and international operations, as well as business, innovation, and technology initiatives.
As with previous editions, the latest report is transparent regarding the firm’s financial results. Mattos Filho has pioneered this initiative in Brazil – since 2014, it has been the only full-service Brazilian law firm to disclose its gross revenue, in line with the practices of major law firms in the United States and Europe.
“In 2022, we remained determined to develop the firm and pursue opportunities with a focus on excellence. Various aspects of the firm underwent rapid changes, and we prioritized projects and initiatives that strengthened us as an institution. In consistently going beyond legal matters in our role as an important business partner to clients, we increased our ability to innovate,” noted Roberto Quiroga, managing partner at Mattos Filho.
The publication also features a guest interview with Brazilian entrepreneurs Abilio and Geyze Diniz. In their conversation with partner Flavio Pereira Lima, the couple discusses their vision of how to grow Brazil and promote business, tackle some of the country’s major social issues, and aspects of effective management. They also emphasize the importance of humane leadership in achieving an ideal balance between business, family, and well-being.
Innovation and strategic vision
The firm’s strategic outlook on business saw it invest further in areas of expertise, creating new practices such as Agribusiness, Cryptoassets, Education, and Venture Capital in 2022. “This development stems from our entrepreneurial spirit and constant focus on topics that have evolved to reach a new standing within the firm,” added Quiroga.
On the international stage, 2022 was marked by a greater diversification in Mattos Filho’s client base, reflecting the growing recognition of the firm’s collaborative and full-service capabilities abroad. Together with Corporate/M&A and Capital Markets – practices that have established the firm’s reputation and tradition in different countries – the firm observed significant international growth in the litigation area, particularly in relation to clients in the tech sector.
The report also highlights the launch of attix – Mattos Filho’s innovation brand – in October 2022, which seeks to strengthen collaboration between startups, clients, and the firm’s professionals.
Mattos Filho’s 2022 Annual Report outlines initiatives that reinforce the firm’s forward-looking approach, with a focus on learning, achievements, and people as an essential part of the transformation needed to drive both the market and society forward.
Social DNA: generating positive impact
The 2022 Annual Report also highlights Mattos Filho’s social ecosystem, which consists of the Mattos Filho 100% Pro Bono practice, its Corporate Citizenship area, and Instituto Mattos Filho. Through its pro bono practice – the first of its kind in Brazil – the firm provided free legal services to civil society organizations and individuals in socially vulnerable situations, such as women who experienced domestic violence, refugees, and victims of racial discrimination.
In 2022, Mattos Filho reinforced its role in fighting social inequality through its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion program. Actions were taken to support marginalized groups, promote further awareness of issues among our leaders, and clear goals were established to standardize understanding of the topic and promote diversity in every area of the firm.
One of the key initiatives of Instituto Mattos Filho – an institute funded by the firm’s partners to promote law and strengthen access to justice – regards a scholarship program for law students. 2022 saw the institute conduct its first census to identify the profile of the scholarship recipients, most of whom were women and black people. Furthermore, Instituto Mattos Filho held the fourth edition of its Access to Justice Challenge, handing out a total of BRL 190,000 to four Brazilian social organizations.
